Bhubaneswar: The number of disgruntled complainants in the Capital city who alleged police inaction is several times more than the number in the Silver City.
This fact emerged from the data obtained through RTI which confirmed that most of the grievance applications received at the Commissioner’s Grievance Cell are against the police stations in Bhubaneswar.
As many as 5,072 people in the twin city have approached the Commissioner of Police for help in solving their cases pending at various police stations in the twin city between 2017 and June 2019. These complainants sought the intervention of the Police Commissioner after the police stations had allegedly failed to deliver them justice.
Meanwhile, the number of such complainants who were deprived of justice stood at 689 in Cuttack Urban Police District while it was 4383 in the Bhubaneswar Urban Police District. The figures indicate the complaints registered in the Capital city were more than six times that of Cuttack.
The report further reveals that out of 1500 odd cases registered at the Khandagiri police station during the period more than 44 per cent complainants (666) lodged their resentment against poor investigation process by the police. It also tops the list at the Commissioner’s Grievance Cell in Bhubaneswar UPD. Similarly, most number of grievance applications received against the Chauliaganj police station in Cuttack UPD.
Seventy-four complaints over the poor response from Chualiaganj police station had been received at the Grievance Cell during the same period against around 780 cases registered at the police station in the same period. The number of unsatisfied complainants is around 10 per cent in Chauliaganj police station as against 45 per cent in Khandagiri police station.
The RTI reply bares the poor performance of the Mahila Police Station in Bhubaneswar UPD in comparison to the one in Cuttack UPD. There are 35 grievances registered at the Grievance Cell from 2007 till June 2019 against Mahila Police Station in Cuttack UPD while 85 grievances reported against the Mahila Police Station in Bhubaneswar UPD. The percentage of disgruntled complainants is around 12 per cent in Mahila Police Station in Cuttack as against 33 per cent in Bhubaneswar.
Meanwhile, out of the total grievances registered at the cell as many as 4172 complaints have been disposed of while the rest is awaiting justice.
Speaking on the issue, Commissioner of Police, Sudhanshu Sarangi said, “We are trying to bring changes in the system and we hope the situation will start improving in the coming 15 days. We will also work to solve the pending past cases sooner.”
