Bhubaneswar, Dec 4: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) information technology project management unit (IT PMU), which was dysfunctional for more than a year, started functioning Thursday.
The IT PMU is responsible for managing the IT initiatives of BMC. It aims to introduce automation and implementation of integrated framework for e-governance to strengthen civic services.
However, for the past one year, the state’s largest civic body failed to maintain its website and execute IT projects. Many crucial IT projects could not be taken up by BMC as the PMU was dysfunctional. This resulted in the poor implementation of the e-governance scheme and became a cause of worry for the civic body.
Now, BMC has roped in IDCOL Software Limited to maintain the corporation’s website, e-despatch (for posting official letters on government’s portal), Facebook page, a toll-free sanitation helpline and many other IT works under the e-governance scheme.
BMC had unveiled its Facebook page on Swachh Bhubaneswar Abhiyan and a special sanitation toll-free helpline number October 2 to sensitise residents on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Clean India campaign and to know about BMC’s activities.
Neither was the Facebook page updated nor did the helpline number work properly as the IT cell was not functioning.
“We had some issues with the IT PMU cell because of which it remained suspended for a long time. Once the new PMU cell is functional, all the issues would be resolved,” municipal commissioner Krishan Kumar told Orissa POST last week.
BMC spokesperson Srimant Mishra said that a new firm has been roped in to strengthen online civic services and enhance the corporation’s efficiency.
