Angul: A minor boy drowned in a pond during the immersion of a Ganesh idol in Angul district Sunday. The deceased was identified as Chandan Parida (15), a Class X student of Khandarbahal village in Angul district.
According to reports, Chandan along with his classmates and some teachers had gone to a nearby pond for immersing the Ganesh idol.
However, Chandan accidentally slipped into deep water. He was rescued by his teachers and classmates and taken to the district headquarters hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.
A case of unnatural death was registered and the body was sent for autopsy. A pall of gloom descended on the school and the boy’s village following the tragedy.
In another incident, a school student drowned in a pond during immersion of Ganesh idol at Jharbahala village in Barkot in Deogarh district Sunday. The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained.
According to sources, the deceased boy along with several other students had gone to a nearby pond early Sunday morning to immerse the idol which was worshipped on the occasion of Ganesh Puja.
During the idol immersion, he slipped into deep water. Following this other students rescued him and rushed him to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors.
Earlier, in a similar incident, a Class X student had drowned during Ganesh idol immersion in Bhadrak district September 14.
