Coast Guard personnel kill fisherman

Paradip: A fisherman died when Indian Coast Guard opened fire at a caret boat Friday midnight. The deceased has been identified as Mayadhar Mallick (50), residing at Naranpur village under Simulia police limits in Balasore district.

The boat named Maa Kanungo was sailing near Barunei river mouth in the sea when it collided with the coast guard patrolling ship for some unknown reasons following which heated arguments broke out between the fishermen and coast guard personnel. The altercation took an ugly turn when one of the coast guard member opened fire at the fishing vessel killing Mayadhar on the spot.

Later, coast guard personnel seized the boat and handed it over to Rajnagar Forest Department officials. The deceased’s body has been kept at the mortuary of Paradip Port Hospital.

The incident sparked resentment among fishermen across the country.

It was learnt that fishermen across the state including Paradip and Kendrapara coast are likely to hit the streets soon protesting against the ‘uncalled’ for killing of one of their clan.
