Collector turns a Good Samaritan

Nabarangpur: The timely intervention of the District Collector has helped a hapless family to avail an ambulance and take the body of a relative for last rites, reports said.

District Collector Ajit Kumar Mishra came to the rescue of the distressed family that was not able to hire an ambulance due to financial constraints. Reports said the family had spent all the money on medical treatment and was left empty handed, failing to hire an ambulance after his death. That’s when the Collector intervened and extended a helping hand. The DM has received applause for his gesture.

According to reports, Muka Padiami (30) of Usakapali village under Kalimela block in Malkangiri district was admitted to Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after being affected by an unknown disease.

However, there was no improvement in his health condition. So, his family shifted him to Koraput District Headquarters Hospital and then to Nabarangpur Christian Hospital. However, Muka breathed his last after undergoing treatment for more than 15 days.

By then, the poor family had spent all the money on Muka’s treatment and could not hire an ambulance. When the hospital authorities asked the family members to take Muka’s body, they were left in the lurch.

Through some source, DM Ajit Kumar came to know of the plight of the family and directed the CDMO to arrange an ambulance for the family. The DM also provided some help to the family from the Red Cross Fund and made all arrangements to take the body to the village for the last rites.
