Balasore: Tension prevailed high at Karmada Surendranath Institute of Higher Technical College under Bhogarai block of this district following a group clash over inauguration of a new building inside the campus by Higher Education Minister Ananta Das Wednesday.
Two students of the college sustained injuries and had to be admitted to a hospital. A police team had to be deployed to bring the situation under control.
According to reports, former union minister Srikant Jena had provided financial assistance for the construction of a new building in the college campus.
Resentment spread among the students of a group after Higher Education Minister Ananta Das arrived at the college to inaugurate the new building Wednesday morning. They allegedly opposed the minister from inaugurating the building, leading to a group clash, sources said.
However, the students alleged that they wanted to meet the minister and ask him few questions. The clash erupted when they were opposed by their rival group from meeting the minister.
“Ananta Das, the Higher Education Minister had come to inaugurate the new building of our college. We did not oppose him, but wanted to ask him a few questions. But, our rival group did not allow us to meet the minister. This led to a group clash in which two students were injured,” a student present in the scene said.
Resentment sparked more as two college students were injured though police forces were deployed on the spot.
Later, more police forced was called to intervene and bring the situation under control. A police team then arrived at the college and pacified members of both the groups. Keeping the law and order situation in mind, the minister had to return without inaugurating the building.
Adequate police personnel have been deployed on the premises to prevent further trouble, sources said.
