Rourkela, Dec 1: A day before the elections for Manaharpur and Jagannath Assembly seats in Jharkhand, security forces stepped up their anti-combing operation in the forest near border areas to thwart Maoist offensive.

Sources said security forces, comprising personnel from Orissa and Jharkhand police departments, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Voluntary Force (DVF), launched an anti-Maoist operation in Bishra, Nuagaon, Biramitrapur, Jareikela and Saranda forest areas bordering Jharkhand. All vehicles plying in the border areas of Orissa and Jharkhand are being frisked, while a few main points along the border have been sealed, said deputy superintendent of police (DSP) PK Mohapatra.

Mohapatra said that Orissa and Jharkhand police, along with CRPF personnel, have been keeping a close watch on the movement of Maoists. The combing operation would continue till the counting of votes is over in Jharkhand, he added.

Sources also informed that security has been beefed up in all the police outposts and police stations in border areas. Special measures have also been taken to check the movement of Red rebels into the slum areas, sources added.
