Patna: Congress MLA Ajit Sharma has written a letter to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, requesting him to bring either an amendment in the liquor ban law, or roll it back.
Stating the liquor ban is a good initiative by Nitish Kumar, Sharma said “the thinking was right and, hence, the Congress party appreciated it, but the implementation is not right”.
“Despite the stringent law that pertains to liquor ban, trade and smuggling of liquor keeps flourishing in Bihar. At present, mafias are offering home delivery to consumers even at a higher price. As the implementation is not right practically, it allows corruption to take place in the police and excise department… and youth are falling into the illegal business due to unemployment,” Sharma said.
“Following the ban, the Bihar government is also losing revenue to the tune of several crores every year,” he said.
Former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, the president of the Hindustani Awam Morcha had also expressed his point of view to amend the law a month ago.
RJD spokesperson Mritunjay Tiwari said, “The liquor ban is just an eyewash and nothing else”.
Rajiv Ranjan, the spokesperson of JD(U) said, “Half of the population (women) are pleased with the milestone decision of CM Nitish Kumar. They will be hurt when such a law is rolled back. It has prevented many incidents of crime and road accidents.”
