Contraband seized, man held in Malkangiri

Malkangiri: Acting on a tip-off, Mudulipada police seized around five quintals of contraband during a raid near Podaghat Chhak under Chitrakonda block in this district Monday night.

The police arrested a youth, Ranjit Kumar Garnaik, a resident of Purunagada village near Chhendipada in Angul district, in connection with the case.

According to reports, the patrolling team stopped Ranjit who was travelling on a pick-up van Monday night.

When police stopped the vehicle for checking, Ranjit and the driver tried to escape.

The police overpowered Ranjit but the driver managed to escape.

The police recovered as many as 16 bags of ganja weighing 477.450 kg from the vehicle. They also seized the vehicle and two mobile phones from Ranjit.

The accused allegedly procured ganja from Chitrakonda and were transporting it to Angul for selling at a higher price, police said.

A case has been lodged under NDPS Act and Ranjit would be produced in the court Tuesday, said a senior police official.
