Contractor held for siphoning off PMAY funds

Jharigaon: Police arrested a contractor on charges of siphoning off funds from three beneficiaries of the Centre-sponsored Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana at Icchapur panchayat under this block in Nabarangpur district, Monday.

The arrested contractor was identified as Chitrasen Tiwari of Ichhapur panchayat. Tiwari had promised the beneficiaries to construct their houses under the Centre-sponsored scheme and siphoned off funds from them. He was arrested after the beneficiaries lodged a complaint at Jharigaon police station. A case was registered and the accused detained, police IIC Natabar Nanda said. He will be arrested if the charges are found to be true during the interrogation, the IIC said.

According to the case diary, three beneficiaries Chitrasen Dharua, Karna Dharua and Rabi Majhi received work order for construction of their houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural).  Tiwari assured them to construct their houses and demanded money from them. The beneficiaries paid him but Tiwari is yet to finish construction of their houses even several years after receiving the money. As a result, the beneficiaries have been deprived of living in a pucca houses and continue to live in their shanties.

The beneficiaries met him and requested him to complete construction of their houses. However, Tiwari refused to listen and threatened them, the beneficiaries alleged in their complaints.
