Cuttack: A private contractor allegedly committed suicide by firing himself from his licensed gun due to financial insolvency at Kalyannagar Postal Colony under Madhupatna police limits here Wednesday.
Police seized the gun and initiated a probe into the incident. A scientific team was also engaged to help police in the investigation.
“Contractor Bishwabhusan Singh was under severe mental stress due to huge debt burden. He committed suicide after a commercial bank attached his earth mover due to non-payment of installments,” claimed Madhupatna police in-charge Tereshkova Mahapatra.
Deceased’s brother in-law Ranjan Kumar Singh, however, raised a doubt over the suicide version. He asked police to launch a probe to find out the truth. “My brother in-law had a dispute with his sibling over landed properties. Police should look into that aspect during investigation,” Ranjan Said.
Sources said Singh shot himself while his wife Rupashree was offering puja at their residence in the morning. Rupashree with the help of neighbours rushed a critically injured Singh to SCB Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, Singh’s younger brother Bishwamohan claimed that the two siblings did not have any major dispute over landed properties.
“Preliminary investigation confirmed that Singh committed suicide. We may look into the murder angle if someone lodges a complaint in this regard,” said DCP Akhilesvar Singh.
