Cook assaults inmates for tuning in to music

Rourkela: Three inmates of a boys’ hostel of Uditnagar Government High School in the Steel City were injured seriously after they were allegedly beaten up by the hostel cook for listening to songs on a mobile phone, a report said Sunday.

The matter came out after Uditnagar police started an investigation over a complaint filed by guardian Rajkumari Khaka of Ambedkar slum.

An injured student of Class VII developed swellings on his left leg and hands and two other students from Class VII developed swellings on their limbs. They are experiencing pain in their limbs after the assault.

The incident sparked tension in the area as the victims were taken back home after primary treatment in the hospital by their parents and guardians. The cook, Bipin Kishan, is absconding after the incident.

The incident occurred when a Class VII student and two of his seniors from Class VIII were listening to songs on a mobile phone when cook Bipin holding a stick in his hand went to them at 10 pm August 30.

Bipin beat up the students black and blue with the stick and the cries of boys rent the air. The boys tried to explain and pleaded for mercy, but Bipin refused to listen and went on assaulting them.

The injured students informed their families Saturday. They were taken out of the hostel and admitted to the Rourkela Government Hospital where doctors administered treatment.

When contacted, headmistress Shakuntala Kishan confirmed the incident and said she had received complaints from the guardians. The matter is being probed and further steps will be taken, she said.

Many inmates of the hostel have alleged that Bipin often comes drunk to the hostel and beats them up for no reason.
