The accused was identified as Dipak Swain, 30, of Baramunda village under Khandagiri police station limits. Swain was produced before the court while many others are still at large.

According to sources, some miscreants who reportedly belong to the Biju Yuva Vahini (BYV) have been engaged in many unlawful activities, have been occupying a club house near the housing board colony for the past few months. Some locals of the colony told OrissaPOST that the residents had informed the police about their illegal activities several times in the past as well. However, police did not take any action against them due to the backing of an ex-corporator of the area and their alleged links with BYV.

Wednesday afternoon, the innocent residents of colony fell prey the opponents of the miscreants. The youths, during the celebration of Holi, allegedly engaged in a fight with some youths of Baramunda village including the accused Swain. Subsequently, Swain and his friends reached housing board colony in search of the miscreants to take revenge on them. Inebriated Swain and his friends went on rampage and attacked everyone who came before them.

Meanwhile, several families of the colony were organizing a feast at the Ganesh Puja Padia near the colony on the occasion of Holi. The accused persons reached there and started assaulting the families including small children present there with sharp weapons and bamboo sticks assuming them as the supporters of the miscreants.

Several of the residents sustained injuries in the attack and out of them seven sustained severe injuries who were later rushed to the Capital Hospital for treatment.

Upon getting the information from the locals, the PCR van no 35 of Khandagiri police station reached the place to bring the situation under control. However, it proved hard for them to rein in the enraged accused persons who ransacked the PCR van too.

Later, some more police force both from Khandagiri police station and Nayapalli police station reached the place and brought the situation under control. Police sources said that police is on the hunt to arrest other accused persons. The real cause behind the incident will become clear only after the arrest of more accused persons.
