Odapada: Police arrested a couple on the charge of kidnapping a minor girl of Kantabania village in Dhenkanal district to engage her in beggary Wednesday.
Monalisa Bhoi (12) alias Itili, daughter of Muchia Bhoi, is a student of Class-VII. She was kidnapped by Bichi Das (35) and his wife Sumitra Das (40) from her house Sunday.
The accused couple kidnapped her when her parents had gone to their farmland. Her parents found her missing when they returned home in the evening. They searched for her in all possible locations but in vain.
The girl’s father lodged a complaint at Kantabania police station Monday. Police registered a case and were conducting a probe when locals informed them about the girl moving with a woman beggar near Nimabahali School. Police detained Sumitra and during interrogation she claimed that the girl was in Chowdwar.
Police searched for the girl in Chowdwar but failed to trace her. Upon further interrogation, Sumitra admitted to her crime and police rescued the girl from Haladiabahal. A case was registered in this connection and the accused were produced in a court.
