Critically wounded striped hyena dies

Kalimela: An Indian striped hyena was found in a critical condition Thursday morning on Purusuguda road under Kalimela Forest Range in Malkangiri district. It passed away before any treatment was conducted.

Suresh Chandra Swain, Kalimela Forester, said that they were informed about a hyena in a critical state on the Purusuguda road. He and his team rushed to the spot and took the animal to Malkangiri District Veterinary Hospital. However, the animal was declared ‘brought dead’.

Swain informed that the hyena had suffered injuries on its spine, head and forelegs. He suspected that the animal could have been hit by some vehicle and hence the injuries.

It is important to note here that Indian striped hyena is a protected species listed in Schedule III of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. They are listed as ‘Near Threatened’ animals in IUCN Red List Category.
