Cuttack: Locals gheraoed Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) Mayor and Commissioner while they were visiting the family members of the deceased minor girl N Mohini Das who died after getting stuck under huge pipes yesterday, a said source Wednesday.
Notably, Mohini died Tuesday a few hours after getting trapped between huge pipes and a concrete slab on a temporary bridge during box drain construction in Kesharpur-Gamandia area under Purighat police limits in Cuttack.
Mayor Subhash Singh and other CMC officials were slammed by several Congress leaders. They alleged that the incident took place owing to negligence by concerned officials.
According to the source, N Mohini Das — daughter of Krishna Das and Hema Das from Gamandia area — was crossing the bridge when huge pipes fell on her, trapping her between the concrete slab and the pipes.
With no way out, the Plus II student of Emarti Devi Women’s College raised an alarm following which locals rushed to her rescue. She was rescued after more than an hour of intense operation. The critically-injured girl was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack and later to a private healthcare facility in the CDA area, where she died.
Meanwhile, the bridge that was built to facilitate the movement of people from one end of the drain to the other, collapsed during the rescue operation. The pipes were precariously stocked for the construction of the box drain, the source said.
