‘Amphan’ claims 2 lives in West Bengal
Kolkata: Extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Amphan made a landfall Wednesday at Digha in West Bengal around 2.30pm. The landfall will continue for four hours. Two women were killed in Howrah district and Minakhan area of North 24 Parganas district as uprooted trees fell on them.
Two deaths reported during cyclone
Two deaths were reported in Kendrapara and Bhadrak during the cyclone. The exact reasons are being ascertained, officials said. A three-month-old child died in Tihidi area of Bhadrak and a team has been sent to the village, they said, adding the exact cause will be ascertained after an autopsy.
A 67-year-old woman died in her house due to natural causes. She was living in a pucca RCC roof house and the cause of death is being ascertained, district officials said.
Cyclone Amphan devastates Jagatsinghpur

So far over four lakh people have been evacuated in the two states of West Bengal and Odisha. NDRF deploys 41 teams in Odisha, WB
Bhubaneswar: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) chief SN Pradhan said Wednesday that 41 teams have been deployed in Odisha and West Bengal as the two states await Cyclone Amphan to make landfall.
“Wind speed has picked up near coastal Odisha & is blowing at around 100 kmph at Paradip. Wind is not that strong in West Bengal. Odisha has evacuated nearly 1.5 lakh people from Balasore & Bhadrak & West Bengal has evacuated over 3.3 lakh people,” said Pradhan.
“We’re looking at time & possible speed of Amphan‘s landing. As per IMD, storm surge could be 4-6 meters of seawater which will enter land area. NDRF teams are coordinating with local administration for storm surge response. 41 teams are deployed in Odisha and West Bengal,” he added.
Heavy rains lash Odisha
Bhubaneswar: Heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places over north coastal districts of Odisha during the past 24 hours as the state readies to face the brunt of Cyclone Amphan.
Gale winds, with speeds reaching 100-110 kmph gusting to 125 kmph, prevailed along and off north coastal Odisha districts and 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph prevailed along and off south coastal Odisha.
The system is now being continuously tracked by the Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at
Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Paradip and Gopalpur of Odisha, says IMD.
1.37 lakh people evacuated
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has evacuated over 1.37 lakh people to safer places as extremely severe cyclone Amphan hurtled towards the coast triggering heavy rain and strong wind Wednesday morning.
Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Kumar Jena informed that over 1.37 lakh people have been evacuated to cyclone shelters till morning and the figure may go up.
According to reports, trees were uprooted and power infrastructure suffered damage following strong winds in the coastal districts. Paradip recorded the highest wind speed of 102 kmph followed by Chandbali with 74 kmph, Balasore 61 kmph, and Bhubaneswar 56kmph.
Paradip also registered highest 197.1 mm rainfall.
As many 16 units of the National Disaster Response Force, 15 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), 75 teams of Odisha Forest Development Corporation (OFDC) and 217 fire service team have been deployed in the affected districts.
