Dalit accuses govt office peon of rape

Kendrapara: A peon of the sub collector’s office here allegedly raped a deserted Dalit woman several times promising her a job in an Anganwadi centre.

Town police registered a case against accused Sura Swain Wednesday, said Tapan Kumar Nayak, the IIC of the police station.

Nayak said a married Dalit woman, Namita Mallick (name changed), aged about 30, a resident of Basaghar, lodged an FIR Wednesday at the Kendrapara Town police station alleging she had been an Anganwadi worker and due to family problems she left the job.

Later, she approached sub collector’s office to get the job back and met Swain, the peon of the office. She said Swain allegedly gave a false promise to hire her for the Anganwadi once again by greasing the palms of his superior.

Later, the accused allegedly asked her to come with him to Bangalore to meet his superior and assured her the job after their return.

“I went with him June 25. He took me to the Yatri Niwas at Bhubaneswar and later to Satya Sai Baba’s Ashram at Puttaparthi and kept me in a rented house. He forced himself on me several times during my stay there for eight days. He also requested me not to disclose the matter to anybody and assured me the job with the help of the sub collector. When I telephoned Swain and asked him about my job after my return, he threatened me of dire consequences,” alleged the victim in her FIR. She came to the collectorate Tuesday to enquire about her job.

“I brought the matter before the sub collector and ADM of Kendrapara Tuesday and lodged an FIR against Swain Wednesday with the police,” said the woman.

The Kendrapara Town police registered a case against Sura Swain and sent the woman to the District Headquarters Hospital for medical examination, said IIC Nayak. Sura Swain has not been arrested so far, added Nayak.

Sub-collector Sanjay Kumar Mishra, said the accused has been transferred from sub collector’s office to the despatch issue section in the collectorate.
