Dancing cops: Fun for one, pain for another

Bhubaneswar: Two traffic cops of the city Benudhar Sahoo and Pratap Chandra Khandwal had proved earlier that talent and profession can go hand in hand. The duo has one similarity which makes them unique, their dance moves. Sahoo, 43, a Home Guard for the last twenty years was known in the city as the dancing cop for many years. Pratap, who is becoming a social media sensation after his popular video on the platform was shifted to the traffic department few years ago, where he realized his true potential. He started using his dance moves during traffic control.

Sahoo, who makes Rs 9000 a month, runs a family of five. He has a wife and three children. He said that he has reduced his moves on the streets due to age related problems. However, he is forced to do those moves due to requests of commuters. He said that passion takes a backseat when you see the reality. His son is currently studying Plus II at Ekamra College. Sahoo hopes that he gets a good job to facilitate his own retirement. He stated that the initial joy that he felt while doing the moves has decreased steadily due to the burden of his family.

On the other hand, Pratap said that his dance moves are the natural reflexes of his work. He said that his moves not only entertained people but also helped them obey traffic rules. Despite the concern of his wife, whom he married recently, he doesn’t mind dancing in the scorching heat as he is in his prime, he added.

The contrasting experiences of similar persons provide some food for our thought as we realize the temporary nature of things. Passions may become secondary if you start sleeping with an empty belly.
