Daringbadi: A man in this town of Kandhamal district has found a fortune by taking up cauliflower cultivation. This has given him a way out to beat the Covid-19 induced lockdowns and shutdowns, a report said.
For Moses Pradhan, working in his farmland is a better option than running after jobs.
Moses, a native of Dulurisahi, chose to take up agriculture after completing graduation in 1995 to earn a living instead of running after government or private jobs.
He is now known as a successful farmer in Daringbadi area and has become an example for others especially when thousands have lost their earnings due to Covid-19 induced lockdowns and subsequent shutdowns.
He continues to earn from his produce when it has become impossible for farmers to send their harvested produce to Berhampur and Bhubaneswar markets due to sealing of borders following lockdown.
The efforts of Moses are finally yielding results as he continues to earn big despite all the hardships.
Moses with little expenditure has managed to earn more when hundreds of farmers in the area are facing loss due to closure of markets. Recalling his foray into cultivation, Moses said no one came forward to help him when he decided to take up cultivation for a living.
He took it up as a challenge and started his farm work by spending around Rs 15,000 he had at that time. His efforts finally yielded results as he reaped a bumper harvest from which he earned Rs 50,000.
His leftover crop will earn him an additional Rs 15,000. He said even as he failed to dispatch his produce outside for sale, locals are visiting his farmland and purchasing cauliflowers from him.
Moses said youths instead of becoming job seekers should become job providers by taking up vegetable cultivation.
