Kanasa: Following heavy rainfall under impact of a low-pressure formed over northwest Bay of Bengal, the water level of Daya River in Kanasa block on Bhubaneswar outskirts crossed danger mark Friday.

Residents of riverside villages such as Dokanda, Balipatna, Tarapada, Badas, Kakharubasta, Baidyanathpatna, Sabalanga, Tentulimula and Gadabalabhadrapur are spending sleepless nights owing to fear of flood.

Besides, the villagers also fear croploss as they have cultivated vegetables such as brinjal, pumpkin, okra, chilli, bitter gourd, yardlong beans, pointed gourds and ridge on the river banks. Many of the vegetable fields have already been submerged in floodwater.

If it continues to rain, the floodwaters will enter the villages, locals said.

Kanasa Irrigation Department Assistant Engineer Makara Behera said the department is ready to take action during the emergency situation.

Khurda irrigation department assistant engineer Saroj Kumar Patnaik said, “The department has also started collecting sandbags in order to fill possible breaches along riverbanks as a temporary solution to tackle any possible flood threat during the ongoing monsoon season.”

The villagers, however, have demanded a permanent solution to the recurring issue.
