De-addiction centre inmate succumbs following attack

Bhubaneswar: The youth who was brutally injured at a drug de-addiction centre in the city few days back succumbed at Hi-Tech medical here Thursday during treatment. The deceased, Sarbeswar Behera was undergoing treatment at the ICU of the private medical college since January 30.

Wednesday, the Commissionerate Police arrested three persons including the owner of the centre, Anirudha Ray in case (37/23) under sections 323 and 307 IPC. Sources claimed the section 307 earlier slapped against the accused trio has now been converted to 302(murder charges) following the death of Sarbeswar.

Sarbeswar used to earn his living by working as a driver in the city. He is survived by his wife and three young children.

The victim, Sarbeswar who originally hails from Nayagarh district had been residing at Patharabandha Basti in Saheed Nagar area along with his family for the last several years. Urmila, wife of the deceased, had revealed that Sarbeswar was excessively addicted to liquor and psychoactive drugs.

The worried family members had admitted Sarbeswar to the de-addiction centre, “Sai Kripa” located in Mancheswar area January 27, 2023 Owner of the de-addiction center, Anirudha, present during the admission assured the family members that the center would take good care of the addict and provide him all the facilities.

Anirudha also told the complainant that they would supply all the information regarding any problem caused by Sarbeswar at the center.

Urmila also deposited Rs 7000 at the center for her husband’s admission Tuesday. Meanwhile, when she came to know that her husband was brutally assaulted by the staffers, she rushed to the de-addiction center.

She found that her husband sustained severe injuries with wound marks on different parts of his body.

The victim was later admitted to Capital hospital from where the family later shifted him to Hi-tech medical college for advanced treatment.
