Death of patient sparks tension at AIIMS

Bhubaneswar: Death of a patient at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) here Monday sparked tension at the institute as the deceased’s relatives engaged in a verbal duel with the authorities accusing them of negligence.
The deceased, Niranjan Satpathy, was from Konark and a priest.
Sources said Satpathy suffered a brain stroke Sunday night. He was first rushed to a hospital at Konark from where he was shifted to Puri district headquarters hospital (DHH). However, Monday, the doctors at the DHH referred him to AIIMS at here as his condition showed no signs of improvement.
According to the deceased’s relatives, the AIIMS authorities did not keep Satpathy in the intensive care unit (ICU) despite his worsening health condition.
It is worth mentioning that the AIIMS here has only four ICUs.
A son of the deceased also alleged that the security guards at the inner entrance of the hospital had barred his uncle from entering inside. “My uncle had gone outside to get medicines for my father as prescribed by the doctors,” he said.
Satpathy’s elder brother also alleged that the late arrival of a neurologist at the hospital was also responsible for the death of his brother. He accused the authorities of providing them “such” treatment as they were poor.
As the situation was getting intense, Khandagiri police reached the spot and placated the relatives to restore normalcy.
