Lucknow: An anti-terror court here Monday pronounced death sentence to Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi, convicted for attacking security staff at Gorakhpur’s Gorakhnath temple with a sharp-edged weapon last year. Murtaza Abbasi was convicted by the ATS court here Saturday and the sentence was announced Monday. According to the FIR, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduate had tried to forcibly enter the Gorakhnath temple premises April 3 last year. A chemical engineer, Abbasi was arrested for attacking Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel stationed at the Gorakhnath temple with a sickle.
Two Provincial Armed Constabulary constables were injured in the incident. He was overpowered by the security personnel and arrested. The Uttar Pradesh ATS had carried out the investigation in connection with the incident.
Prashant Kumar, ADG (Law and Order), said that the accused was handed the death penalty under Section 121 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused was also given life imprisonment under Section 307 for attacking police personnel.
