Bhubaneswar, August 7: GM Debashis Das played out a stalemate, while Padmini Rout was beaten against their respective opponents in the fifth round of the Asian Continental Chess Championships at Al Ain, UAE, Friday.

In the open category, Debashis forced Tologontegin Semetey of Kazakhastan to share points. He is now in the joint fifth place with 2.5 points in his kitty.

Grandmaster and six times national champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly remained on course for regaining the title defeating Pouria Darini of Iran.

In the women’s category, Indian eves’ aspirations suffered a serious setback as Padmini Rout, Soumya Swaminathan and Eesha Karavade lost their games. Second seed Padmini was beaten by Aulia Medina Warda of Indonesia, who emerged as the sole leader on 4.5 points. Padmini is sharing the joint fourth spot with three points in her kitty.

Saina takes sole lead

Saina Salonika won her seventh round match comprehensively to advance to the sole lead position in the U-12 girls’ category of the Asian Youth Chess Championship at Suwon, South Korea, Friday. Saina outwitted Tamir Saruul of Mongolia to leapfrog to the pole position with 5.5 points in her kitty.

In the U-18 open category, Vaibhav Mishra overcame a stiff challenge from compatriot S Yogit. With this victory, he jumped one place to share the joint third spot along with two others with three points.

However Mahitosh Dey was beaten by compatriot Aditya Mittal in the seventh round of the U-10 open category. She is now in the joint fourth position along with three others with four points.

Smaraki Mohanty hold on to her sixth position with only two points, despite getting a bye in her fifth round match of the U-18 girls’ category.
