Bhubaneswar, August 9: Debashis Das registered a facile victory, while Padmini Rout played out an exciting draw in their sixth round matches of the Asian Continental Chess Championship at Al Ain, UAE, Saturday.
In the open category, Debashis prevailed over Li Di of China. With this victory Debashis leapfrogged one place to be in the joint fourth position with 3.5 points.
Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly continued to lead the tables jointly, following an easy draw with International Master Lin Chen of China. Ganguly and Lin Chen remain the only two leaders in this section with five points each in their kitty.
In the women’s category, Padmini forced compatriot Bhakti Kulkarni to share points with her. Padmini is now sharing the joint fourth spot with 3.5 points in her kitty.
Former national champion S Viajayalakshmi came roaring back in joint lead after crushing top seed Tan Zhongyi of China. With her fourth victory beside two draws, Vijayalakshmi took her tally to five points out of a possible six and now shares the lead with Iran’s Mitra Hejazipour.
Prakash stuns Birakishore
Fifth seed Prakash Sahoo stunned top seed Birakishore Behera in the sixth round of the IIIrd Umesh Memorial All Orissa Chess Championship here Saturday. With this stunning victory, Prakash advanced to the top position with six points in his kitty. He is followed by Dhirendra Das, who has five points out of a possible six.
