Debashis static on joint 2nd spot

Debahis Das defeated CH Meghna easily in New Delhi, Saturday

Bhubaneswar: GM Debashis Das of Odisha returned to his winning ways Saturday with a fifth-round win over WFM CH Meghna of Railways at the Commonwealth Chess Championships in New Delhi. The victory enabled him to maintain his joint second spot with 4.5 points along with four others – namely IM Karthik Venkataraman of MP, IM G Akash of Tamil Nadu, GM Baibhav Suri of Delhi and Sankalp Gupta of Maharashtra. IM S Nitin has emerged sole leader with five wins from the same number of matches.

However barring Debashis the other Odia players have so far failed to impress. Vaibhav Mishra is currently on tied fourth with 24 others with 3.5 points apiece.

Vaibhav registered a fighting victory over Dhanashree Rathi of Maharashtra while mahitosh Dey beat Adarsha Tripathi of New Delhi. However, Sambit Panda went down to Karthikeyan.

Other results: Rajesh Nayak bt M Southey Andrew, Kiran Manisha Mohanty lost to Nisha Mohota, Ansuman Samal lost to Ankit Chudasama, Susobhit Das bt Rahul Mishra.

Match drawn

Bhubaneswar girls played out a 9-9 draw against Patna in a kabaddi match of the 49th KVS National Sports Meet at the KIIT premises here Saturday.

However the boys’ team lost all their three matches to Patna, Silchara and Varanasi.
