Deceased’s kin thrashes ‘intoxicated’ doc

Bolangir: A doctor of the Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital here was thrashed mercilessly Monday night by the family members of a deceased for alleged negligence. The deceased, identified as Niku Barik, 30, from this town died as he was not attended to properly, his family alleged. They added that the doctor was also intoxicated and could not even talk properly. Family members of Niku said he fell ill Monday and was admitted to the hospital in the evening in critical condition. Despite repeated requests, no one attended to Niku for a substantial period. Niku’s condition deteriorated and he breathed his last.

Finally, at around 11.00 pm a doctor came to check Niku. However, by that time, Niku had already breathed his last. Relatives of the deceased found the doctor in an inebriated condition when an argument broke out. The family members blamed the doctor for Niku’s death and started thrashing him up. Finally, security guards at the hospital rescued the doctor and whisked him away to safety.

Tension prevailed at the hospital Tuesday morning also. A large contingent of cops was seen moving inside the hospital complex keeping watch on the situation. Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital superintendent Manasi Panda meanwhile informed Tuesday that a probe has been initiated to find out the truth about the allegations of the doctor being drunk. “We have formed a panel with six senior doctors to look into the incident. Action will be initiated if the allegations are true. Even though, I know the incident happened Monday night no formal complaint has been lodged with us or with the police,” Panda informed. It should be stated here that, scores of house surgeons of the Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital had staged a ceasework over an alleged assault on their colleague Biswaranjan Sahu December 29, 2023.
