Pallahara: The decomposed carcass of a tusker was found Saturday from a farmland under Pallahara forest division in Angul district. The adult pachyderm had wounds on its body, an official said.
According to sources, some Pallahara locals noticed the carcass lying in a paddy field near a village this morning. Later, they informed the forest officials about it. A team of personnel from the department reached the spot and recovered the tusker’s carcass.
Forest department officials initiated a probe to ascertain the cause of the adult elephant’s death. “There is a deep wound on its head. The reason behind the tusker’s death can only be known after the postmortem report comes in, the senior official in Pallahara division added.
In another incident, an ailing tusker died while undergoing treatment in Lahada B reserve forest under Sarangi range of Dhenkanal Saturday. The elephant was suffering from septicemia, an official informed.
The tissue sample of the tusker has been sent to the Centre for Wildlife Health to ascertain the exact cause of death, Dhenkanal DFO informed.
