Demand for HC bench: Bolangir bandh till Dec 30

Bolangir: The Joint Action Committee and the District Bar Association intensified the ongoing agitation for establishment of a permanent bench of Odisha High Court in Bolangir.

The lawyers’ association has called for a bandh here from Monday to December 30 and warned of intensified agitation until their demands were looked into.

The protestors have called for closure of all offices, educational institutions and banks in the district during the agitation.

The agitators were picketing at several places in the district resulting in disruption of vehicular traffic Monday.

“The agitation for the establishment of a permanent High Court bench in Bolangir will be intensified and all the offices of the State and the Central government, banks, schools and colleges will remain closed from December 24 to December 30 in the district,” said Joint Action Committee (JAC) convener Lalit Nayak.

Notably, the JAC and district bar association are spearheading the agitation since December 3 after shutting down the Collectorate, Tehsil office and other institutions in Bolangir.

As many as 300 organisations in Bolangir have extended their support to the agitation which is currently underway in the district.

The agitators have also threatened to intensify their agitation if the government does not take appropriate steps to concede their demands at the earliest.

Meanwhile, a 12-hour dawn to dusk bandh was observed in Kalahandi district over the demand of a permanent bench of Orissa High Court in the district Monday.

The members of the committee picketed in front of many offices from early morning.

Normal life came to a halt in the district due to the shutdown of markets, business houses, financial institutions, court, government and private offices.

However, educational institutions and vehicular movement have been kept out of the purview of the shutdown.
