Denied money for gambling, man kills wife

Puri: A woman was allegedly killed by her husband by slitting her throat in Chitrakar Sahi under Town police limits here Monday.

The deceased was identified as Laxmipriya Pradhan, 35.

According to sources, Laxmipriya, the second daughter of Krushnachandra Rout, had tied knot with Gadadhar Pradhan of Jenasahi. They have a 14-year-old daughter. Gadadhar was a habitual gambler and an alcoholic. He had lost lakhs of rupees to gambling and also sold his two bikes recently. Gadadhar had allegedly beaten up Laxmipriya several times and demanded money from her.

Unable to bear the mental and physical harassment, Laxmipriya was staying with her parents at Chitrakar Sahi. Locals said Gadadhar was a frequent visitor to his in-laws for money. He was allegedly thrashing his wife at the in-laws house when the latter refuses to give money.

Monday, a tiff ensued between Laxmipriya and Gadadhar when the former, who was alone at home, rejected his request for money. An enraged Gadadhar slit her throat leading to the instant death of Laxmipriya.

According to a complaint lodged by Krushnachandra with Town police, “We had gone to Sakhigopal to visit our elder daughter. Villagers informed us around 2:30pm that Gadadhar killed your daughter.”

Town police inspector in-charge Umashankar Singh said, “Prime facie, family feud is the reason of the murder and started an investigation while Gadadhar is absconding.
