Bhubaneswar: A differently-abled young man attempted suicide Wednesday in front of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s residence here as his long-pending demands were not getting addressed by the government.
That said, on-duty security officers rescued him and handed him over to his family.
The young man has been identified as Rabindra Kumar Das of Madhupur village under Mahanga area of Cuttack district.
According to Rabindra, he had appeared in Plus-II examinations under Ravenshaw University back in 2008. On declaration of the result, he came to know of his failure in Sanskrit.
During admission, Sanskrit had been allotted to him as fourth optional subject but he had changed it to education. In fact, education had also been written as his fourth optional subject in the admit card and he had appeared in the examination for the same. The result of the paper somehow was not released.
Das alleged that he was manhandled and pushed out of the gate by the examination controller when he attempted to apprise him of the situation.
Later he moved consumer court and subsequently the Orissa High Court where he received a favorable verdict in 2009. The upper court, in its order, had asked Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) to release the result and pay the student a compensation of Rs. 1,02,000 since he was not able to pursue higher studies owing to withheld results.
That said, no action was taken on the court order. While the man wanted to approach the Chief Minister on this context, he was denied a meeting that led to his suicide attempt in front of Naveen Niwas.
