Doctor crunch hits dialysis unit; patient dies

Rayagada: Even as a dialysis unit was set up July 2 at the district headquarters hospital here, it is now plagued by a shortage of doctors, resulting in the death of a patient Wednesday.

While most patients are not aware of such a facility at the DHH, a few who know of it have to return empty handed due to the absence of doctors.

Meanwhile, a kidney patient Khagapati Batria (32) of Badakankudibadi Wednesday died at the DHH as he couldn’t avail the dialysis service, it was learnt.

According to reports, a private company was roped in to offer dialysis service to the patients affected by kidney ailments. The company engaged a doctor, a dialysis technician, a regional manager, a staff nurse and a manager. Dr Bhagirathi Barik joined the unit July 10. However, he resigned from the job July 18 leaving the unit in a defunct state.

Hara Nayaki, a kidney patient of Dangasil village of Kashipur block, came to the hospital for dialysis July 13 but he had to return home as the required documents couldn’t be signed by the higher authorities for approval for dialysis, it was alleged.

Similarly, there are several kidney patients in Kolnara block who fail to get the dialysis service.
