Dolphin census to begin Feb 12

Puri: The forest and environment department has decided to start a dolphin census along the Orissa coast and in Chilika lake February 12.

According to sources, forest department officials will conduct the dolphin census from Udaypur coast in Balasore district to Patsonpur coast in Ganjam district. Varieties of dolphins like Bottlenose, Humpback, Irrawaddy and Gangetic are found along the Orissa coast. Chilika is famous for the Irrawaddy dolphins.

Officials of the forest divisions in Balasore, Bhadrak, Rajnagar, Puri, Chilika and Berhampur will take part in the dolphin census, added the sources. According to officials of the forest department, animal census in all the sanctuaries of the state will be conducted between February 5 and 10.
