Drainage still distant dream for residents of Keonjhar

Keonjhar: With the onset of monsoons in Odisha, the residents of this city are living with apprehension of tackling water-logged dirty streets and lanes because of the lack of proper drainage facilities.

Most of the drains in this city cannot facilitate the flow out of water as they are clogged with garbage and plastic. The district administration is trying to clean and desalt the drains, but so far their efforts have been futile.

Even before the rains are to hit the district, water logging has affected the city in a major manner. In many parts of the district, stagnated water can be seen. It emits foul smell and also is a source for various diseases.

According to Braja Kishor Roy, a resident of Keonjhar district stagnated water has become a huge problem. “The problem is that the tribal people sit near the stinking drains to sell their produce. They forget that they can contract diseases sitting close to such rotten and dirty places. With the monsoon all set to arrive, the situation is bound to worsen,” said Roy.
