Jeypore: Acting on a tip-off, a special police squad nabbed notorious criminal Ranjit Bagh following an encounter near Kumbhar Sahi bypass road here in Koraput district Saturday evening.
The accused sustained bullet injuries on his leg and fell unconscious. The raid team rescued him and admitted to Jeypore district headquarters hospital (DHH) under the police custody.
According to sources, Bagh was one of the most wanted criminal in the area. He has several cases of loot, murder, dacoit, attempt to murder and ganja smuggling against his name in several police stations.
A special team was formed to trace his whereabouts. However, every time, he managed to give police a slip. Saturday evening, the police team came to know that Bagh was on his way to Jeypore from reliable information.
Based on the tip-off, a police team intercepted him at around 7 pm Saturday evening and asked him to surrender. However, sensing the movement of the cops, Bagh opened fire on them and tried to escape. In retaliation, the police team fired at him after which a bullet struck on his leg.
While Bagh sustained bullet injuries to his right leg, one constable was also injured during the gunfight. The constable has been admitted to a nearby hospital.
A country-made pistol, two round live ammunition, one empty cartridge, a mobile phone and Rs 5000 in cash were seized from the accused.
Several cases are pending against Bagh in Koraput and Malkangiri districts. He is admitted to hospital and will be produced in court after improvement in his health, the police said.
