Dug-up roads in Vyasanagar invite mishaps

Jajpur: Commuters in this district are facing numerous problems as most of the roads in the district are in dilapidated condition, especially the roads from Dhabalagiri to Chordda Square, Jajpur-Keonjhar Road railway station to Dak Bungalow Square and Dala in Vyasanagar town of the district.

What has added to their woes is the whimsical pipe-laying work of Bharat Gas Resource Limited (BGRL).

Already damaged by the heavy vehicles plying to and from Kalinganagar industrial area, the roads have now been dug up at many places for the BGRL’s pipe-laying work. As a result, accidents are occurring on these roads every day.

To reach Vyasanagar town, there are two roads. One is the Dhabalgiri Square-Mundomal Road, while the alternative route is via Chordda Main Road. This road has been dug up at many places to lay pipes and the company, instead of filling them up after completing the work, has left them open. At places, crusher dust is being used to fill up the potholes and pits, making the situation worse. At the same time, since the pits don’t have signage to warn people, accidents are common.

A few days ago, a motorcyclist was injured after falling into a pit on the stretch from Indira Gandhi College to Chhotraypur. Following the incident, infuriated villagers of Chhotraypur had a heated argument with the BGRL company officials.

Before starting the pipe laying work, the company had entered into an agreement with the Works department agreeing to repair the road after the completion of its work.

“Instead of repairing the roads, the company is getting its work done by filling up the potholes and pits with earth and crusher dust. They have done more harm than good. The festive season is ahead and we fear the deplorable road condition would play spoilsport,” apprehended some locals.
