Bhubaneswar: A ‘Satellite Brain Bank’ will be set up soon at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar.
Director, AIIMS, Prof Gitanjali Batmanabane Sunday said, “It will be one of its kind in the Eastern India and will help facilitate research in Neuroscience.”
The department of pathology along with the department of laboratory medicine at AIIMS, with the help of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience (NIMHANS), have been funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for this purpose.
An amount of Rs 47.7 lakh has been sanctioned for the project for the first year. The brain bank In AIIMS Bhubaneswar will collect and conserve the brains of the deceased. Donors without neuropsychiatric disorders but with a history of neurological diseases or post-accident trauma would be preferred.
It is pertinent to mention that NIMHANS, Bengaluru was the first to set up a brain bank in the country.
