Easy wins for Sambit, Mahitosh

Bhubaneswar, July 20: Orissa players had a mixed day in office in the 10th and penultimate round of the U-11 Open Chess Championships at Pondicherry, Monday. Sambit Panda and Mahitosh Dey won their matches, while Vaibhav Singh suffered a reverse.
Sambit outwitted Arya Bhattacharya of West Bengal to maintain his joint second spot with eight points. In another match, Mahitosh outwitted BJSK Ranadheer of AP to remain on joint fourth.
However Vaibhav slipped to joint sixth after suffering a humiliating loss against H Bharath Subramaniyam of Tamil Nadu.
Six selected
Six players from Orissa (men and women) were selected for the U-21 national sepak takraw training camp from which the team for the Asian Sepak Takraw Championships at Hyderabad July 24- August 22, will be selected. The players will depart from Bhubaneswar, July 23.
Selected players: (Women): Tulasi Behera, Aliva Das, Itishree Samal and Chunmun Samal; (Men): Nihar Kanta Behera. (Coach): Lalatendu Swain.
Taekwondo meet
Orissa State Taekwondo Association (OSTA) will organise the 30th State Taekwondo Championship and State Poomsae Championships at the Sahid Nagar Indoor Hall in Bhubaneswar, July 24-26. “These competitions will be played under four categories. Based on the performances in the tournament, the state team for the upcoming National Taekwondo Championships will be selected,” OSTA stated in a press release Monday.
New committee
In a bid to develop women’s sports in the district, Cuttack District Sports Association (CDSA) formed a women’s committee during its AGM, Monday at the Barabati Club House in Cuttack, Monday.
Olympian Anuradha Biswal will head the committee, while former footballers Gitanjali Khuntia and Pratima Mishra have been appointed as members. “The committee will spot talents and work for the development of women’s sports in the district.” stated CDSA secretary Asirbad Behera.
