EC bans all biopic content including film on Narendra Modi

New Delhi: It was a moral victory of sorts for the opposition parties as the Election Commission (EC) banned Wednesday, the release of any biopic including the one on Prime Minister Narendra Modi which was scheduled to hit the screens, Thursday.

Earlier in the day, the Censor Board had given the film the ‘Universal’ or ‘U’ certificate, thus paving the way for its release. However, later in the day, the decision of the EC certainly was a huge jolt to the producer and director of the film as well as the BJP. Party workers all across the country had been queuing up to see the movie.

“Any Biopic material in nature of biography sub serving the purpose of any political entity or any individual entity connected to it, which has potential to disturb level playing field during the election, should not be displayed in electronic media including cinematograph,” the EC said in a statement.

It should be stated here that Tuesday the Supreme Court had referred the matter to the EC. While dismissing a petition filed by a Congress activist seeking stay on the film’s release, the apex court had said that the Election Commission would be an ‘appropriate’ place to seek redressal.

The film titled, ‘PM Narendra Modi’ has actor Vivek Oberoi playing the lead role and is directed by Omung Kumar.
