EC orders action against cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir

New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) said Saturday that cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir will face action for organizing a rally without taking proper permission from the poll body.

Gambhir, who has been nominated as the BJP candidate from the East Delhi constituency conducted a rally April 25 in Jangpura area without taking permission thereby violating the model code of conduct. The EC said that it has asked the Returning Officer of the constituency to file a case against Gambhir.

It should be stated here that the former Indian cricketer has openly always praised the policies of the BJP. Last month he was inducted into the party by senior leader and minister, Arun Jaitley.  This month he was nominated to contest from the East Delhi constituency against Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress and Atishi of AAP.

In 2014, the East Delhi constituency was won by Maheish Girri of the BJP. So to some extent, the seat can be considered ‘safe’ for Gambhir.

Meanwhile in another development, the AAP has registered a criminal complaint against Gambhir as he is registered as a voter in two constituencies.
