Eight held for fishing at Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary

Kendrapara: At least eight fishermen were arrested for illegal fishing at Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Bhatarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary in Kendrapara district Saturday evening.

The arrestees have been identified as Ajay Brahma, Balaram Gochhayat, Kesura Mallick, Manas Mallick, Rabindra Mallick, Bharat Mallick, Dibakar Mahanta and Gokul Mahant.

According to reports, a team of forest officials led by Additional Forest Conservator, Srirampada Arvind Mishra intercepted a fishing vessel Baba Chandaneswar during routine patrolling while it was carrying out unlawful fishing activity at the marine sanctuary.

Police also seized 35 quintals of fish from their possession.

The accused have been forwarded to court.

Fishing has been prohibited at Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary due to the mass nesting of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles.
