Cuttack: The Cantonment police Tuesday arrested an eight-member dacoit gang for its alleged involvement in a loot case January 1.
Police recovered six bikes, gold ornaments, 10 mobile phones, and Rs 76,000 from their possession. Police sources said the value of recovered gold ornaments is calculated to be around Rs 1.30 lakh.
The arrested have been identified as Md Sahil (23) of Siddheswar Sahi near Lalbag, Jainal Abedini (22) of Chandin Chawk, Sheikh Karmat (22) of Nima Sahi near Purighat, Sheikh Sabir alias Rahul (23) of Baunsagali area near Daragha Bazar, Wazid (25) and Sheikh Raja (19) of Hatipokhari, Niyamat (18) of Kesharpur area near Mangalabag and Sheikh Jana (49) of Pension lane near Cantonment.
According to police sources, Anand Kana, a resident of Apannanagar near Chauliaganj, who is a chicken vendor at Mahanadi Vihar, was returning home after closing the shop January 1. He was carrying Rs 8.11 lakh with him.
Four bike-borne miscreants, who were following him from Mahanadi Vihar, waylaid him at Tanta Sahi near Cantonment.
The miscreants snatched the bag containing cash from Anand after attacking him. They also snatched away the bike from him and fled the spot.
“The miscreants confessed to the crime they had committed January 1 and also to some other ones,” Cantonment police station IIC Ramesh Mahana said, adding that the CCTV footage helped them nab the gang.
