Bhubaneswar: Leaders of eight political parties led by Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Sarat Pattanayak Monday urged President Droupadi Murmu to ensure the safety of democracy, democratic institutions and judiciary.

They urged this in a memorandum submitted to the President through Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal. The memorandum said after the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014 there is a continuous onslaught on democracy and democratic institutions.

The members of Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (ML), Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM, NCP (Nationalist Congress Party), Samajwadi Party (SP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Forward Block (FB) and Republican Party of India (RPI) marched in a rally to Raj Bhawan and submitted the memorandum to the Governor for its onward transmission to the President.

The opposition members alleged that recently when Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi raised the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gautam Adani in parliament and the pumping of about Rs 23,000 crore from many offshore shell companies and managed by Adani family, their statements were expunged.

The memorandum said membership of Rahul Gandhi has been expelled from the Lok Sabha within 24 hours of pronouncement of judgement on defamation case to silence his voice.

It further said the opposition members are being vilified using central agencies like ED, CBI and IT and put into jails for no reason.

The Union Ministers and Prime Minister who have promised to uphold the constitution are joined together to negate the spirit of the constitution.

Most of the opposition leaders are being harassed on regular basis and those who could not able to sustain their threats joined the BJP.
