Chandragiri: The carelessness of an auto driver led to an accident near Jalibadai village under Mohana police limits in Gajapati district Friday morning, leaving eight students injured. The condition of one of them is stated to be critical.
A few of the injured students alleged that the auto driver was talking on his cellphone and that led to the accident. He failed to notice a curve and at the last moment trying to avoid it, skidded of the road and turned turtle. Local people came to the rescue of the students, but by that time the driver had fled.
The critically injured student has been identified as Alif Bir (15) while the others who have suffered injuries are Madhiyas Lima (13), Rohan Nayak (seven), Monalisa Parichha (16), Lili Bir (13), Saina Lima (four), Madhusmita Nayak (four ), Sahil Chinchani (14) and Biswasini Parichha (15).
The injured were taken to the Chandragiri community health centre (CHC). However, Alif was later shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after his condition worsened.
Sources said, that the auto had picked up 12 students from Sinkulipadar village and was heading towards Chandragiri when the mishap occurred. Personnel from the Mohana police station reached the spot quickly and also helped in rescuing the injured children.
The police has seized the auto and launched an investigation.
