Elderly man ends life after hacking son to death

Bargarh: A 75-year-old man hacked his son to death with an axe over a petty family dispute and then hanged himself in the wee hours of Sunday.

The incident was reported from the Raipada area of Pahadasrigida village under Attabira police limits in Bargarh district. The father was identified as Pinke Bariha and his son as Pinke Subbarao (56).

On receipt of the information, police reached the village and started a probe. The bodies were sent for autopsy.

According to sources, Bariha had two marriages. His first wife Gorama lives in Andhra Pradesh while the second, Chandrama, lived with him.

According to sources, Subbarao, son of the first wife, also resided with his father and earned a living by tending cattle and doing agricultural work.

The duo had long-standing differences over various family matters and had frequent altercations.

They had a heated exchange Saturday evening which turned physical and violent. However, peace was restored at the intervention of the villagers and the family had dinner.

Later though, Bariha picked up an axe and hacked Subbarao while he was sleeping in a cot in the verandah of the house.

Bariha then went to a cowshed near the house and hanged himself to death.

Bargarh SDPO Suresh Kumar Nayak arrived at the village and started a probe.

“The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and a probe into the incident is on,” Nayak said.
