Elderly man killed over suspected witchcraft in Odisha’s Sambalpur district

Sambalpur: Miscreants brutally killed a man in front of his wife at Dimirikuda village under Kisinda police limits in Sambalpur district over suspected witchcraft practice and sorcery, Monday night.

The deceased was identified as Sukru Majhi in the village.

As per the report, the elderly couple — Sukru and his wife Ratani — was preparing food for dinner when suddenly three to four miscreants barged into their house and assaulted Sukru with an axe and lathi. Profusely bleeding, he died on the spot.

The miscreants also attempted to kill Ratani but she managed to flee from the spot. She returned Tuesday morning and lodged a complaint at the police station, informed, Redhakhol SDPO PK Meher.

He along with Kisinda PS IIC Anchali Kumbhar and a scientific team reached the spot and launched an investigation. Police seized an axe, two lathis, blood-stained clothes and some other items used in the crime and registered a case.

The main accused Sanju Majhi was arrested while the others were on the run.

Preliminary investigation indicated it to be a case of suspected revenge killing by the prime accused who is the neighbour of the deceased as he suspected Sukru responsible for the untimely death of his four-year-old son due to his practice of sorcery.
