Berhampur: In yet another incident of crime against senior citizens, an elderly woman was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants following a broad daylight robbery in her house at Jemadeipentha Colony under Badabazar police limits in Berhampur Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Jambubati Sahu. The elderly woman was alone in her house when armed miscreants barged into her house.
“We suspect the involvement of some known persons in the incident as they were aware of every detail of the movement of other family members,” Jambubati’s grandson, Shankarshan Choudhury said
He said that the intruders had looted nearly Rs 3 to 4 lakhs from the house along with a gold chain that his grandmother was wearing.
After getting the information, senior police officials along with a forensic team and sniffer dogs reached the spot and launched a probe. The exact cause of the murder is not known yet.
While many suspect the looters killed the woman in a bid to loot, rumours are the miscreants might have killed her over previous enmity and committed the loot just to mislead the police.
Based on a complaint by the deceased’s family members, a case has been registered and a probe is on, keeping in view all angles, said a senior police official.
