Elephant calf falls into canal, rescue efforts on

Parjang:  Efforts are on Friday to rescue an elephant calf which has fallen into a canal near Khalpala village of Dihadol forest section under Mahabirod range in Dhenkanal forest division Thursday night. However, the attempts to bring the calf back on land have so far proved futile.

Forest department officials said that the mother of the calf is also preventing people from going near the calf. She is chasing everybody away once they venture too close to the calf.

Sources said, Mahabirod ranger Subrat Kumar Behera, deputy ranger Haramohan Nayak, forester Ramchandra Rout and an elephant squad have camped at the spot. They are monitoring the situation. “Once the mother elephant backs off we can make a proper attempt to rescue the calf,” said an official.

Ramchandra also informed that a tusker has been on a damaging spree in Paramahansapur area since Thursday night. Attempts to chase the elephant away failed as the vehicle of the forest department staff got stuck in the mud.
