Bhapur: An elephant calf got trapped inside a well while it had strayed into Jhumpudia village near Bhapur in Dhenkanal district Tuesday morning.

Forest officials reached the village and started the rescue operation, which began with the digging of a huge pit near the well.

The elephant was eventually rescued from the well after a four-hour long operation.

According to sources, the calf had strayed into the village in search of food. Accidentally, it fell inside a deep well and was trapped. Locals spotted the animal in the well Tuesday morning and alerted the forest officials.

Tension prevailed in the village as the well was inside a local farmer’s farmland and the forest officials dug out the well without his permission.

However, the situation was brought under control after the officials assured of necessary compensation for the loss of paddy.
